Adventure 2 - This is what we came for

... Cut them down we did.

Once again we've vanquished another yellow robed cultist and the owl beast. Upon searching him we find another golden medallion. This cultist was standing near and altar where the large egg was, from which the owl-beast emerged. We took a brief look at the alter but could discern nothing, so we moved on.

As we continued our search we came into a room, similar to the last, but this one contained an Owl-beast about to eat a chained up woman. We quickly attacked, overwhelming it and cutting it down. To secure the girls freedom, Sigorn stepped forward and set his spear in the chains to break them. As he strongly pulled back, to break the chain, he was overcome with his sickness and spewed what little was still left in his stomach onto the girl. Stostine pushed him to the side and allowed Searos access to the chains where he easily picked the locks and freed the girl.

She told us her name was Rose and that she'd been here for days but every time they'd moved her they'd done so in the dark and she was so disoriented she didn't know anything of where she was or where to go.
Stostine immediately took her under her wing, cleaned her up andclothed her in gray cultist robes. Bruun gave her a dagger to hold, in case she needed to fight, and Sigorn gave Bruun a spear to use.

Curious to find duplicate medallions of gold, and even bronze, we decided to inspect them some more. While doing so we also noticed that the medallions fit into a groove upon the altars that we found in all three rooms. Battlebeard and Sigorn both grabbed a medallion and placed it into the groove on the altar, and both disappeared. We stood around for a few minutes wondering what next to do when Battlebeard suddenly appeared before us again. He explained the medallions were keys to transportation, but that the transportation was only between the three altar rooms that we'd already cleared out.

It's getting pretty dark in here, we keep wondering around but we only have the one lantern lit. Luckily it's very bright.
In our walking around we've found ourselves in a large room with multiple passage ways that pass through a horrific wall. The wall is sculpted to look like the large tentacled monster that lives in the chasm. We're taking a break before we investigate the passage ways.

P.S. At least Sigorn has stopped breathing so heavy. He actually looks like he's relaxing and has stopped sweating. Some color is coming back to his face.

Adventure 2 - Oops! Too late.

The fighting continues.
The battlefield is the tight hallway at an intersection with the furnace room. We have them closed in on two sides and we're pressing them hard.
Seeing the tide of battle in our favor some of our number grow bold and leap over the others and slash at the cultists.
Dahli glides through the air with grace only an Elf could show, slashing down with a mithril longsword and killing the cultist with one blow.
We dispatched the enemies and after finding nothing of value on their persons we went back to our intended task.
Skel picked up a corpse of a cultists, carried him back to the pool, now covered in molted chicken feathers, and dropped the corpse at the edge.
We saw no effects happen to the body and so Skel rolled up the sleeve on his scaly gray arm and dipped a finger in the pool. He told us he only felt a slight tingle and so he descended into the pool. With a sharp wince of pain he surged forward and climbed out of the pool on the other side. He looked only a little worse for wear and so we all, by turn, crossed the pool. Each of us feeling some mild pain.

We continued on and found ourselves in a room with very large, egg shaped, closets, or armoires. Old Mac climbed inside one, closed it, and a moment later he climbed back out. Skel decided to do the same, only he didn't open back up. Kadelthin then approached the closests and studied the runes and was able to read them and he told us it was a transportation device. So, we all, in turn, climbed inside the many egg closets and found ourselves transported to a room that looked identical to the one we'd come from.
After looking around we found a hallway and so we went down the corridor and found another room.

Inside this new room we found a strange device, and within it was incubated a living thing. We saw tubes that wound around, and through the device and lead to the living thing. Sigorn must have thought those metal tubes were meant to be blown into because that's exactly what he did. He walked up to one and pressed down his mouth and blew into the tube.
He came away spitting. We figure he said it tasted nasty, but truthfully we couldn't make out his words as he held his tongue and kept spitting.
Immediately Sigorn was grasping at his stomach and grunting in pain. He looked visibly paler to some of us a and every few minutes he'd clench his muscles tightly and then relax, but every time he'd relax he'd sag just a little more. He was visibly wasting away before our eyes.

Stostine grew very alarmed. She tried to lay her hands on him to heal but she incurred displeasure from her deity. Mort tried to lay his hands upon Sigorn, but his deity smited him with a curse. When Mort tried to lay his hands on Sigorn again he felt the energies were out of tune, somehow weakened. Old Mac spoke of a concoction he'd made many a time. As a farmer he'd tended a herd of goats, and many times he found the goats had been bitten by a chupacabra and were sickly. This potion, brewed from the dander of a dog, wine that had been stored in a cave and rutabaga bits, had cured all of the goats. He made the potion and gave it to Sigorn, who immediately turned his stomach and everything came back up, splashing onto Stostine who had tried to help Sigorn keep the potion down. Old Mac made his potion again, making a double batch this time and gave them to Sigorn again. This time he was able to keep one of the potions down, but sadly he didn't look any bit relieved by the drink.
Not risking any more disapproval from the gods, the clerics said they'd revisit the issue later.
And so we travelled on, to see if we might find a cure deeper within.

We came upon a lone yellow robed cultists, sitting next to a very large egg, not at all unlike the transport eggs we'd used. Upon him seeing us he pulled out his dagger and sliced open the egg and out spilled another 10 foot Owl-octa beast. We've learned that there is no quarter with these cultists and so we attacked immediately.
Sadly, once again our innexperience shows as many of our warriors are not even succeeding in hitting.

We'll soon see who gets the better of the other...

Adventure 2 - Look Behind You

I still laugh every time I think about how awful we were fighting in the furnace room. Battlebeard and I are constantly making jokes and having laughs.

Our exploring continued and soon we found ourselves in hallways that we'd seen before. Finally we weren't lost. Knowing where we were we ventured down some paths we hadn't tried yet. We found ourselves in a long room with a pool covering the entire floor. The dark murkiness looked very dangerous and so we decided to test the water. We threw one of Old Mac's chickens into the water to observe.
Our answer was immediate. As soon as the chicken touched the water it flapped it's wings and flew upwards, only to come crashing back into the still water, dead. Some power or force had touched it and it had died. We began to think that since the laboratory was in the adjacent room that one of the potions might be the key to crossing. Since the gray robed cultists we'd killed had likely drank such a potion we decided to fetch back some of their bodies for more testing of the water.

No sooner had we arrived back at the furnace room then we heard feet shuffling and noises from a party coming down the hall. Sigorn and Battlebeard hid themselves in the furnace room. Searos lurked in the shadows, and Skel ran to go and get help. His running was so noisy that the cultists approaching noted their warrens had been invaded, or maybe it was the string of dead bodies we'd left behind us, and they pursued. In their pursuit, though, they noted that Battlebeard and Sigorn were in the furnace room and so they turned and attacked us.

Searos leaped from the shadows to deliver a wicked blow at the Tone monster, the one who looks like an owl-octo-beast. He then jumped back inside the room, staying behind Battlebeard and Sigorn.
The Crimson cultists began chanting and a wicked looking tentacle, with eyes and teeth came from a void and struck at Sigorn. He avoided the strike, only to see another strike coming in at him from another tentacle that the gray robed cultists had chanted into existence.

With a mighty roar, Battlebeard tried to shove the Tone backwards, but it was almost 3 times his height and the monster did not move. Still, Battlebeard delivered a vicious blow. Next came Sigorn with a strike at the beast. Not having done enough harm, the beast struck out at Battlebeard and missed. The two warriors then, again, struck out. This time Sigorn delivered such a powerful blow as to split the jaw of the Tone. The Tone sustained so many wounds that it succumbed and died.
Searos was not content to sit and wait, and while the two warriors fought the Tone, he tried to sneak past, to strike at the crimson robed.
His stealth was seen and the Tone took a bite out of Searos. Yet still, Searos struck at a crimson robed and hurt him enough to cause him to stop chanting.
With the Tone now dead, Battlebeard and Sigorn engaged the Crimson robed. Fighting in the narrow hallway there wasn't much to be done, and yet both Battlebeard and Sigorn killed a crimson robed cultist in one strike. With mighty deeds of strength they dropped the foes before them.

By this time Skel had reached the rest of us and told us we needed to come and give aid. We all rushed back and struck at the group of cultists in the rear, quickly cutting and slashing our way into the group of 6 grey robed cultists.

The work of death still continues.

Adventure 2 - The Warrens

We've totally lost our way. When we first descended into the pit, off the cliff, we found simple path ways, but now we find many different ways to go, and all of them built by labor. We barge in room after room.
We've run into a few more members of the cult, and we've cut them down. At least, we try to.

Just the other day we barged into a room and as we walked around it, some crimson robed cultists and an octo-owl-beast  came upon us. The bro's gave a ferocious roar and charged. But all of their swings went wild and hurt no one. How can you be that bad? It took the rest of us to cut down the cult. By the time the bro's recovered from their blunder they could only vent their rage on another shadowy octomass. They jumped and stomped on it, in their rage, not even bothering with their swords.

We continued exploring and we found a laboratory. Potions of silver or red, urns filled with grey powder, vials and dishes. Not seeing an immediate threat, we fiddled with the potions.
Old mac grabbed some potion and force fed it to his chicken. Even if that bird dies I don't think it's safe to eat it's flesh, not now it's been poisoned. Skel was helping Old Mac with that, but moments before he just grabbed some grey powder and poured it into a silvery vial. I saw a mist like talon come from the gray powder and swipe at Skel, but he paid it no mind and the apparition disappeared.

In going from room to room we found a furnace room, with big large coal burning boilers, and three gray robed cultists working the furnace with shovels.
Once again the bro's rushed right in, screaming their barbarian battle shouts. I could tell they meant to shove the cultists inside the furnace because they hunched behind their shields as they ran. But the fools must have been running with their eyes closes. Not only did they not knock down anyone, but Skel swung his sword with full strength right at the furnace. Hello? At the furnace? He smacked down on it so hard his sword shattered.
The cultists were shocked. Not only had they been snuck upon, but the sneakers failed to inflict any harm.
It only became more of a carnival.
Brunn charged the cultists and he too swung with full power and missed his target. His sword crashed into the floor with a mighty shattering sound. Two of our warriors gone completely brutish and laughable.
Mort charged up and attacked and the cultists dodged him, but then Merlin knocked and arrow and let fly. The arrow did not fly true, and instead shot Mort in the backside.
It was such a farce that Battlebeard could not contain his laughter. He saw these weakly gray robed cultists standing around, barely needing to defend themselves against 5 warriors who couldn't strike them if their life depended on it.
So intense was this circus that even one of the gray robes was laughing at us, until Stostine's hound ripped out his throat.
To add insult to injury, Not only was Mort hit in the back by an arrow, but the gray robe slashed him with his knife. Then after all was said and done, we pulled the arrow out of Mort, causing additional injury. I think Mort bled more at our own hands than he did at the hands of the cultist.

This adventure is turning bizarre. Maybe this pit monster is attacking our minds and turning our thoughts into jelly.

Adventure 2 - Cleaning House

Facing the Owl-faced octobeast we planted our feet squarely and then charged.
Our strongest warriors charged the beast and our rogues and mages attacked the attendants. Our skill as a fighting group is proven again as we quickly dispatch the cultists.

We riffled through their corpses and found some amulets and collected them up. More precious treasure to fund our adventuring.

In all of our travels we still have not found any clue of the kidnapped villagers. We go from room to room, hallway to hallway and find nothing but fights.

Just when we thought every room was going to be of no interest we came upon a spacious room with a vast maze covering the floor.
Stostine called upon her god and was told that the room permeated with magic. Since we didn't know the source of it we advanced cautiously, wary of traps.
Old Mac untethered one of his chickens and urged it forward ahead of us. The chicken walked out onto the black and white floor maze and with a sudden electric pop the bird flew up into the air and feathers flew in every direction.
Right, a deadly maze.
Now a tiny bit wiser, Sigorn decided to walk the maze, staying only on the white and trying to avoid touching the black. He kept wincing in pain and grimacing in agony. He reached the other side and told us he saw doors, but that he didn't want to come back as the process hurt to much.
So the rest of us traveled over the maze. When we reached Sigorn Stostine layed her hands upon him and he was healed.

United as a group, we opened the doors and stepped through. With each person passing through the portico they disappeared from sight. We all found ourselves in a new room, it too containing a maze, and on opposite sides of the room we saw doors. Knowing the maze to be dangerous, we opened the door behind us and passed through it.
We found ourselves in a hallway with a few rooms that proved to be bunk rooms. So we kept walking forward.

We came into a large room with a door opposite us, and immediately before the door stood a giant toad, blocking our way. He didn't make any threatening moves and so we called out to him. His answer came as a thought in our minds.
He said he knew our thoughts and that he could only let those who served his master to pass. We took the chance and told this toad that we did serve his master.
In our minds we heard that he knew the lie.
The toad turned his head and looked at the bothers, Skel and Sigorn, and just then Sigorn stooped down and gripped his head, as though a thousand voices screamed out in pain and once and were silenced.
The Toad looked from person to person, saying nothing but a few more curled up in pain.
Surely the toad must have known our thoughts, known that when something blocks our path we strike at it, and so it struck first.
Some of us had succumbed to no pain and they charged.
Stostines dog ran up and bit the toad. With a smack the toad hit the dog with it's tongue and pinned it down. Battlebeard was next to strike and he sheared through the toads tongue and sunk his battle axe deep into the toads body. Old Mac took a vicious strike from the murky monster but Stostine laid her hands on him and he was healed.
Once again we quickly dispatched our foe. As the toad died the body turned into magic and floated away.

We shall soon find out what secrets the toad was protecting.

Adventure 2 - Rumble with the Cult

...The fight carried on.

We'd surprised the members of the cult by having Searos jump out and deliver a sound thumping on their leader. Dalhi let lose and arrow and the leader fell down unconcious, but still breathing.

Seeing the leader fall so easily we took heart and attacked the rest.
Having past experience with the gray robed, we focused on the red robed. Our warriors, Bruun, Old Mac, Skel and Sigorn all engaged. These men are monstrous powerful and they quickly dispatched the crimson robed. With each death an octomass surged out of the fallen's chest. This wouldn't be a problem except two of the masses attached themselves to the throat of Stostine's dog and to Kadelthin. For fear of hurting our friends we'll have to carefully kill those octomasses.
The gray robes began a dark and evil chant and from behind a tentacle appeared and whipped out and snatched Stostine in a strangling grip.
We'd lost Star to such a grip and so many went immediately to attack the tentacle, in the hopes of stunning it and dislodging Stostine. But it was to no avail. The slithering limb quickly healed from every slash it took.
Knowing the tentacle to be controlled by the cultists we knew they all had to die quickly.
Battlebeard knocked into one of the grays with both his shield and his weapon. Killing the first and knocking the dead body into a second. As a group, we were able to dispatched the last of them and deal with the following octomasses.
Stostine was freed. We'd killed ten cultists and not a single one of us had fallen during the fight.

But our relief was short lived.

Coming from the same tunnel was escorted a deep and dark thing. A monster of maybe twice the height of a man, a face like that of an owl's and the body of flailing tentacles. This spawn wasn't as big as the tentacles we have before faced, but it looked of the same ilk.
Accompanying it came a handful more crimson robed cultists and a few more cultists who still looked human.

Knowing we were set upon again, we all watched in amazement as Old Mac stabbed through the unconscious yellow robed cultist with his pitch fork then with a mighty surge of strength he lifted and threw the body thirty feet through the air. So powerful was the throw that in midair we saw the octomass spawn from it's chest and fall to the ground with a satisfying splat. The body fell upon the giant spawn beast, becoming impaled upon the owl beak.
With a bestial roar the monster opened it's mouth and the body ripped from the beak and fell to the floor.

Now with a short distance between us we all stand ready to fight for our lives.

Adventure 2 - Ghosts and Chains

After killing the basilisks we looked further on and we found our way back outside to the ledge again. Knowing that the giant tentacled monster is not constrained outside we decided it was best to go back inside and explore.
We climbed down the rope ladder that was strapped to the tentacle coming through the pit. About 10 minutes later we found another landing and so we all stepped off and took stock.
This room curved a bit out of sight and as we went to investigate we could tell the rock had been carved by people and here we found seven wooden caskets.
We've come to take advantage of Battlebeards ability to smell gold and so he walked right up to one of the caskets and shoved off the lid. Just as he pulled a golden medallion out from the casket and put it on, seven ghosts appeared from a wall and began to strike at us.

We tried to fight back. We swung swords, we lashed out at them with torches, we desecrated the bones and destroyed a coffin. The ghosts did nothing but keep striking at us.
Stostine called upon her God and compelled two of the ghosts to flee, but the other five quickly drained the energy from Sigorn and Kadelthin.
With two of our party crumpled to the floor and nothing, not even mithril weapons, able to touch the ghosts, and Stostine's incurred displeasure to her God, we knew nothing to do but run.

We fled the room.
Old Mac picked up Kadelthin and Skel picked up Sigorn and we fled the room.
The ghosts followed us but as we entered the tentacle room again the stopped in a line and stood mute and motionless.
Fearing another confrontation elsewhere we went back up the rope ladder and took a rest.
Stostine began to chant and seek her God's approval again. She chanted so long I think Battlebeard was about ready to chant curses along with her, such was his disdain of the prayer.
Kadelthin and Sigorn surprisingly wakened and began to regain their energy. We took some time to eat and rest up.

After the much needed respite we travelled back down the rope ladder, past the Ghost chamber and further down.
We found a room with a large grinding stone and slaves chained to the push rods, driving it around and around.
The slaves barely took note of us until we snapped off their chains. They looked entirely astonished to be freed and yet seemed to not know they'd been rescued.
We told them how to travel to get out of here. Just as we were explaining it and they disappeared, a group of cultists walked into the room upon us.

The shock of them seeing a group of armed adventurers was just enough time for Searos to sneak around them and attack the single Yellow Robed cultist. With a flurry, Searos beat upon the cultist with his billy club, hitting him so hard and so fast that he knocked the stout cultist to the ground. Knowing that peace was not our path, we all began to assault the figures. Just as someone attacked one of the three Crimson Robed cultists, the Yellow Robed stood again and slashed a wicked cut across Searos' chest. Dalhi let fly and arrow that struck the Yellow robed cultist and felled him again. A mighty foe that one. We must cautiously deal with him as we fight the remaining three Crimson robed and six Grey robed cultists.

Battle is joined and our fate is yet to be decided.

Adventure 2 - Such an Enchanting Cave

Battlebeard came back out of the tunnels and told us what he'd found. He was all cut up from some traps (good news, the traps are sprung and won't hurt us. Way to go Battlebeard). Mort and Battlebeard get along really well and so Mort lay his hands on Battlebeard and healed him.
We tried getting more information from our enthralled cultists but they claimed to be newly initiated into their order, so we know nothing of what is below.
We do know what it outside, a giant tentacle monster that can throw us from the ledges. We're going to avoid that and so we'll explore the tunnels.
We decided we didn't care if the cultists got hurt, so we sent them down the sliding shafts in the tunnels and they told us it opened up into a larger room and was very safe. So, we semi-fastened a rope in the tunnel and everyone climbed down.

The room opened up indeed, but a pick was in the middle and once we had all arrived a tentacle slowly extended itself out of the pit. Strangely, the tentacle, as huge and monstrous as it was, had a ladder fastened to it. The cultists told us this was for transportation. Most of us were wary, but Bruun was not afraid and he hopped on board.
The rest of us, seeing a hallway walked down it, away from the tentacle that kept stretching towards us, and found ourselves in a section of cave that wasn't carved by man. The stalactites and stalagmites formed everywhere and our torches cast eerie shadows everyone. Battlebeard moved to the front of the group and started leading the way deeper in so we all sort of followed him. After we were well inside this cave Battlebeard froze suddenly and then we heard a hissing noise.
Two large basilisks slithered down from above us and moved to attack Battlebeard and Skel in the front.

We didn't hesitate and we all began to attack. The clerics cast spells to make themselves more battle ready and others simply leaped in.
Searos used the chaos to creep behind the basilisk and leaped at it with a blow that the creature didn't see coming. He struck, from behind, at the creatures face, causing it to howl in agony and close it's eyes to protect them.
Merlin commanded the thralls to attack the injured basilisk but it's incredibly tough scaly hide left it uninjured. Many such blows landed ineffectually.
Then as one, both Skel and Sigorn turned on one of the creatures and both crashed their shields into the side of the head of it's head. The shields smashed into opposite sides of the head and both warriors unleashed savage blows with their longswords to devestating effect. The basilisk visibly jolted and a tremor ran through it's entire both. As it died it convulsed in savage movement. I asked the two about their teamwork and they said they'd been practicing this maneuver for some time and called it the "Bro Bash".
With one monster dead and one viciously wounded we were able to easily avoid getting hurt by it's wild and random flailing. Searos moved in to take advantage of the the creatures blindness and delivered another vicious cut with his dagger. Felling the wild beast in a second thrust.

With no one hurt, and Battlebeard recovering from his hypnosis, we saw, to our delight, that the creatures both had somewhat golden horns. We cut the horns from the bodies and stowed them inside battlebeards chest. Two golden horns, what amazingly valuable pieces those must be.

Adventure 2 - A Warm Welcome

We appeared standing at the top of a steep escarpment, looking down over the chasm.
We began climbing our way down and soon found ourselves on a narrow path along the edge.
Mist and shadow are all we can see before ourselves. Something is out there just beyond sight. As we continued we saw before us the very cult who is responsible for the girls disappearence. We moved to charge them but the very narrow ledge prevented us from rushing them and so a number of our strongest fighters formed a line and advanced on them.
That's when the magic began. The cultists began a chant and a monstrously large tentacle came shooting out of the mist and it grabbed Star. Quicker than a thought, Star was ripped from the ledge and thrown into the abyss. We never even heard him scream once. Doubtless the warriors didn't know anything of it happening until after the cultists were dispatched.
Our magicians cast clever spells and enthralled three of the cultists, forcing their will to our own. We used them to turn on the other cultists and they fought.
Searos knocked and let loose and arrow that took one of the mysterious chanters down. Where the arrow struck blackness sprouted. We thought it unholy blood, but then the glob turned and began to attack our warriors.
We fought on the narrow ledge, killing cultists and smashing octomasses.
Soon two were dead and we had three enthralled. We had them lead the way down and we continued along the narrow ledge, descending into darkness.
We came upon a door and we had our slaves push them open. Within we found a narrow hallway which we advanced down. Not to long later another cultists jumped from the shadow, plunging a dagger into one of the thrall's heart. We were so quickly taken by surprise that he was jumping at us before we could react.
Fighting in these narrow confines is moving to be a major hinderence.
Every time a cultist is struck down, no matter the hand doing it, an octomasse has spawned. We quickly dealt with the attacker and began exploring again.
Dalhi had a smart idea and began to converse with the thralls. The thralls revealed a secret passageway below the altar of one of the prayer rooms. We entered it and found 4 large egg like stones upon another altar. Sadly, the tunnel is very cramped and only Battlebeard was able to easily travel through the passage.
He came back out a while later with three large injuries to his body. Cuts, from traps he explained, along his body. He also told us of some dark passages that slipped downwards into darkness with slides so steep he feared he could not return the way he'd come if he descended.

So far no sign of the girls or any treasure.

P.S. The taint of the evil tree is still among us. A couple of the lads went to worship Malloc at the altar here. Luckily the evil god whose altar they used didn't object.

Adventure 2 - The Chasm and the Cult

Now that I know the men of my party better I shall give a list of them and their occupation.

Old Mac, a fearsome rutabaga farmer. His pitchfork caused some pious wounds.
Brünn - A woodcutter Opposoman turned warrior.
Battlebeard, A runty Dwarf warrior with an evil eye, maker of mediocre chests.
Sigorn, The weaver turned warrior.
Kadelthin, the Evil Elf with knowledge of forester lore.
Merlin, Malicious Maleficent Mage.
Stostine, the Pious Priest and his faithful herding hound.
Dalhi, The Sage Mage of Elvish gauge.
Skel, the warrior who digs graves for his enemies.
Biff, Fetid and Foul Opossuman Warrior.
Star, the Shaman who kept looking for his God in the sky. A righteous cleric.
Hagog, an Opossuman Warrior like biff, but neither fetid or foul.
Searos, the hunter turned thief.
Sea Salt, the crazed halfling mariner.
Mort, Vile Vicar, a Cleric Opossuman.
Rocky, A dwarven warrior who was always carving evil emblems into stones.

And so we ventured forth from the town again.

We went back to the old Oracle and she told us of an evil force that has been dormant for many years because of the ritual sacrifices of virgins. The villagers in the affected area grew capable and drove off the cult members. While trying to stop the sacrificing of their daughters they did drive off the cult, but not before many daughters were kidnapped.
Help is needed, and so we shall go. We all touched our hands to the sending stone and found ourselves transported to a deep and forbidding chasm.

Day 1 - Out of the Swamps and into our Hearth.

Tonight I'm resting easy. I'm in a room at the inn, looking forward to a good nights rest.

After we fought the crocadillo we decided it was time to get back to town. We walked up to the sending stone and we all placed our hands on it.
We found ourselves outside of town and near the oracles hut. We were making our way to town when she came out and told us that if we came this way again she'd tell us more about some virgin girls who had been kidnapped.

We made our way to the center of town and found someone to fence our treasures. And what treasures they were.
When we'd started our journey only Podrick had been wealthy, the rest of us had barely a handful of coppers each. Now that we returned with treasure we were each given 74 gold pieces and a little more than 30 silver.
Hungry for more wealth we all quickly bought up arms and armor, supplies, mules, and other such things as we needed, and even some things we didn't need. Old Mac had been pining for his lost chicken, and so he bought himself a few more, calling them "Battle Cocks". I'll be sure to enjoy their flesh when they inevitably die and we roast them up nice and tender.

A good nights rest and real weapons and armor and we're ready for anything.

The end of the Sunken City Adventure.

Day 1, From Darkness To Light And Back Again

With the Tree behind us we went back down to the pleasure room and went down the last tunnel that we saw. It ended, not to far, with a strong wooden door bound in iron bands. We tried the door but it wouldn't budge. Not to be discouraged, we tried the door in groups even. Each time we failed there was a report amongst the men that they just couldn't try the door again. Like a weariness, only none of them wanted for sleep.
We finally got the door open, by one of our mages none the less. The warriors must have loosened it up for him. And through the door we found our salvation.

The days light pored down on us. We rose from the tunnel among the debris of a collapsed building, all of which was overgrown with thick moss and ground cover. Our door had not only be rusted shut but also tied closed by the plants and their roots. We'd ripped our way to the surface.
We'd finally gotten to the surface and our sense of time was restored. We could see the sun close to setting on the horizon. Not wanting to spend the night under the arena, with skeletons, slimes, Errol, poisonous air and a bewitched killer tree, and who knows what else, we decided to stay outside and go else where.

We hadn't gone far before we were back in the swamp, up to our ankles in mire and stagnant water with it's slime and squishy plants. Our feet were making sucking noises as we lifted them with each step. We made so much noise that none of us were prepared when two crocadillos attacked us.
We swarmed over the monsters. We quickly killed one and drove the other off. Being attacked actually had a side benefit. As we took stock of the situation following the melee, we noticed the remains of other adventurers, and their possessions. We armed ourselves with a few spears and even found an ivory statuette.

And now darkness of night is creeping up on us.

Day 1, The Tree's Gifts

The roots are still striking at us, but we're fighting them off. No one seems to be getting hurt for the moment.

In this temporary calm, two things happened. One of our clerics ran up to the tree and started praying or meditating and then Gilch ran forward and grabbed the chalice out of the gaping maw. And that's when the battle tipped the scales.
Gilch get ensnared by hundreds of smoky tendrils from the maw. They wrapped around him and constricted his movement and started to drag him into the mouth.
Where moments before we'd been able to ward off the roots from the pits now they struck out with renewed strength and immediately a bunch of the guys got entwined and were also being pushed towards the maw.
We tried our best to free them but with the roots waving about the woodcutter actually slashed Gilch with his axe mighty fierce. Others were able to untangle themselves through their own strength and others needs our help to free them. We attacked the roots time and again. If we were lucky we freed someone, but never did we hurt the roots.

The tree must be magic and so we got desperate. We took the golden talisman with the tree symbol and we threw it inside the maw, nothing happened and so we threw the golden chalice in too. Still nothing.
We're getting desperate because nothing is working. We're looking around for our next best option. A couple people are still being dragged kicking into the maw, the cleric sits entranced in a meditation towards the tree, which very strangely the tree hasn't even struck out at him. It's as if they share a bond. But the cleric isn't talking and so we don't know anything about this magic tree.

That's when poor Gilch finally got pulled into the maw, and the tree went calm. The roots let everyone go and they pulled back into the pits and we heard an evil voice speak to our minds.

The tree asked us if we wanted to worship Malloc. I said no and felt a force strike me. The next thing I know I'm waking up and I see about half the group is laying on the floor and slowly getting up, shaking their heads and steadying themselves. The other half of our group all look different in odd ways. One guy now has horns, another has a scaly arm, yet another has green tinged hands, and another still is sitting on the floor touching some growth on his foot. When I asked them what had happened they didn't even seem to notice that half of us had fallen to the ground, they all just said they felt different. I don't know how, one says he's never felt so healthy, another says he feels like he likes more people and another says everything feels lighter, or he's stronger, he really didn't know the difference.

This room seems like it was a big mistake to enter. Gilch died and we have two pieces of treasure less than we entered with and nothing more to be seen. As we're leaving the room I see Old Mac throwing a hook down the maw of the tree with a rope and actually fished out the amulet, and then the chalice.
That's some bravery to even touch that tree after what it just done to us.

We're back to exploring this dungeon and we found a door. Only it's sealed tight. It's not locked but all the same no one can move it. We've almost all tried and the effort we gave is leaving us tired and worn.

Maybe tomorrow we'll find out what's behind the door.

Day 1, The Lonesome Tree wants Solitude

This place is a labyrinth.

We've found a hidden set of rooms and hallways that is just as extensive as the main hallways. Who knows how big it really is, we went down one hallway to find a rock cave in. The dead end wasn't a total loss though, we found some dead guy in the rubble and his adventuring had been prosperous, up until his death. So, we relieved him of his golden amulet.
He must have found the amulet here because it had the emblem of the gnarly tree on it. We've seen that emblem in a couple places now. On the button in the arena pit that turned off the lightning wall and on the white towels. I guess it's the sigil of the Lord of this land.

We went down some more tunnels and found the very tree we've seen so many times. The true doesn't look natural, like stone instead of living wood. The clerics say the room has a very eerie feel to it. I can see a bunch of holes in the floor that form a circle around the tree. A couple of our toughs walked closer to the tree, and the holes, to investigate what looks like a skeleton's bones sticking out of some maw in the tree. They shouted back that the maw has some magic in it, little black smoke fingers waving around. It almost sounds like the dead was stuffed into the mouth of a tree. Evil indeed.

We didn't want to get to close to that maw and so we trying to rope the skeleton and tug it out. No one is good at throwing this rope and so we just couldn't get it. Then Gilch, not seeing any danger, walks up and grabs the skeleton. This caused a big reaction. Roots are shooting out of the holes in the floor and are waving at us and coming closer. We've been striking at them and this seems to drive them back temporarily but it doesn't seem to be hurting the roots.

Now we're standing, trying to fight the roots and we don't know what's going to happen next...

Day 1, Breathe deep in the Pleasure Room

Twelve dead.

That slug room appears to have been a waste. We squished some slimes and got six white towels for our effort. Risk our lives for towels.

So, out the room we go and head north into another room. Here we found a collection of curious stoppered clay jars.

Best to be prepared, the clerics cast some spells to look for magic, but at exactly the same time Gilch ran up to a jar and popped the stopper off easy as you please. He immediately reaches inside and gives this face of pain and effort. I'm thinking the fool should have waited for the clerics to tell us if it's safe. Likely he'll lose that hand. But then out he pulls a bit of electrum. The grin on his face tells me he never once thought this was dangerous.

So, old man farmer goes up and fetches two jars and another warrior, Sigorn, grabs one. The farmer pulled out a piece of electrum from each jar, the other warrior popped open the jar and out spewed a vile green cloud. The smell quickly spreads over the room but it seems only those closest actually cough. Sigorn even grabbed his stomach in pain.

The cloud was growing bigger so we decided to run. As I turn around to flee I see one of the elves in our party push open a trick door. We all quickly enter within and hurry down the narrow hallway and out we come into another room where we see some once beautiful, yet now ragged tapestries hanging. We'll get a better look at the tapestries after a rest, but for now I need a break. That gas has me breathing rough. But the good news is, the tapestry room already has some riches that we've taken. Someone freed a silver rod from one of the tapestries.

I sat down near that chest making dwarf, a wise idea to keep an eye on him. He was already sitting down and going through his chest, taking inventory I guess. I hear him mutter faintly about caltrops, a dagger, hammer, bags, sort of mundane stuff, but he gets this look in his eyes and so I listened harder and I hear him clearly say, "Three hundred and fifteen silver pieces. I've done it." Scheming little Dwarf. The secret is out, now I know how much my cut is. I'm Hoping I'm not the only one seeing this, so I look around and I see a couple others nearby, pretending not to stare, but it's obvious they're watching the dwarf too, and a couple of them are grinning and licking their lips.

Day 1, What's that smell, Fish or Slime?

Twelve in the party dead.

We're finally getting some treasure. The guys on the boat came ashore and said they'd found some money and some caltrops by a skeleton on the island. And a journal.
We read the last entry of the journal and it told us the fish was intelligent. Said his name was whiskers, but that he didn't like that name. Well, we already know to not make that fish angry, or was the fish just hungry? He ate two of our party after all. So, instead call him Errol, because that's the name he likes. I'm thinking the dead man on the island called the fish Whiskers one too many times.

We are in an underground level of the arena and know nothing of the place. Since the journal says the fish is intelligent we decide to chat him up (Whose idea was that anyways? The fish just ate our companions). But we had no idea if he'd come if we just said his name, so one of the group tried to summon the fish with his magic. You know why people keep dying when the mage casts his spell and instead of Errol coming to talk two normal fish appear above the water in the air. Well, Errol came anyhow and ate the two fish. So, now we're talking to a giant man eating fish.
We posed the fish some riddles, I can't remember them cause they was complex riddles. No wait, one was a trick. We asked him, "What is my name?" and the fish spoke it... eerie. The other riddle's answer was, "A fish." I couldn't remember the riddle, but you'd think a Fish would know a fish when he heard one described.
And then Errol swims away and we're all none the wiser, and actually we had to give him gifts every time he guessed our riddle.
We still hadn't asked our real question, where is the treasure? So, we tried speaking to Errol again. He came up and spit water on a couple of us, the jet stream of water even knocking one guy down to the ground, hard.
Yeah, maybe that's a taste of what you get if you call him Whiskers.
One of our vain companions had a hand mirror with him, pretty boy was actually an ugly one, so what he thought to do with a mirror I don't know. He offered to let Errol see himself in a mirror, mayhaps for the first time in his life, and the fish actually liked it. He swam down into the water and back back up with a slime covered chest. It was full of silver.

I knew I'd get rich out here, or die. I'll tell you who is gonna die. That dwarf chest maker keeps volunteering to carry everything, and he's done it this time. As soon as we got the silver he's putting it into his chest. I better find out where he keeps the key.

Getting all of that silver has made us bold again, after the arena pit, and we've begun exploring even more.
We found a room with purple slugs everywhere. They were covering every bit of wall, and they was making some kind of humming noise. While I was looking around at the slugs our farmer man walks into the room and out slides two nasty looking purple slimes. Before I've even had a second to think the farmer is shredding into the slime with a fury and a cleric is casting magic, then when he struck the slime it stopped moving and went all firm and solid. We quickly killed the slimes and were able to look around the room some more. We found a chest, and inside the chest we found six perfectly folded and clean white towels with that same wicked tree embroidered on them. Nows the first time I'm thinking about how dirty I've gotten, what with walking through a swamp and jumping in a sand pit and falling into a pool, getting splashed by a giant fish and rummaging through a dungeon.

I think I'd trade some of my silver for one of them fine towels.

Day 1 - To Feed a Fish

Twelve dead in the party, five joined earlier.

After taking stock of the situation and getting ready, we left the pool and headed towards the door.

Old man farmer is a bold one, he opened the door and was confronted by a skeleton. And we're back to fighting.
We destroyed eight skeletons but not without loss. One of the monster men got wrapped up by one of the skeletons wicked chains. We rushed to his aid but as we killed the skeleton he jerked the chain and ended the armadillo man's life.

Outside the pool room we entered a large hallway with three different ways to go. We found some torches and candles and those chains and passed them out among ourselves.
While we're doing this the old farmer man goes off again, this time throwing some of his food off down the hallway. I don't know if he was trying to ditch the hen because he threw the food awful far. Waste of food.

So, we all walk down between the arches because we see a shimmer in the distance and we find a slow moving underground river.
It sparkles mighty fierce and we can see thousands of crawfish and one of us swears they saw something big move under, deep.
Something deep in the water? So what's the Halfling do? he rigs a pole with some chicken and makes a fishing pole. Funniest death of all. Fool must have had it coming. He was dangling it in the water and a gigantic fish comes surging out of the water and pulls him in. Before we know what's happening the water gushes red with his blood and he doesn't come back up.

Across that river we can see some building remains and we all want to go see, but after seeing that big river fish a couple of the lads just aren't sure, but a couple of them grab a bronze brazier next to the arch and toss it into the river like a boat and then paddle across. We can see them but they don't tell us nothing. Then they're paddling back to us. And that's when the fish strikes. He rocks the brazier and knocks two guys into the water.
We'd already seen what that fish had done for the halfling, but that fish didn't strike for a whole minute and then one of the boys got pulled under and didn't come back up.

Well, just be smart. Some guys are dying, but some are already getting riches.

Day 1 The Friendship Pool

Nine dead in the party.

After the chaos above the fall was peaceful.
It seemed to go on for a long time but then before I knew it I'd landed in a magical pool.
All of my pains and injuries were healed.

After me and a few others climbed out of the pool a few more fell in, and they too healed.

Their tale was more of the same grisly.
More of our party jumped down from the stands into the pit and got hurt real bad by the fall and the metals balls that were shooting around.
They couldn't get a proper look for having to run real fast but we think five more of the party died in the pit.
With all this danger around us I wish I could have gotten the armor off one of the dead fellows. Now the next poor adventurers to enter the pit will get his armor, that is if they don't die.

What surprised me the most was to see some of those monster men fall into the water, what we fought out in the swamp. And they're talking to us. At first they went searching through the belongs of one of our party who fell dead into the pool. We all banded together and pushed them away from our dead companion. But then, they started talking with us. They'd come into the arena to explore and got caught in the same trap as us. They aren't hostile towards us, not like the first group who attacked us without even a word.

The chaos has made strange friends of us.

Day 1 - The Stadium that cried Blood

Four of the party dead.

After crossing the swamp on raft was a bust we've decided to take a look at that Arena.
The building is of amazing construction, wonder why the swamp doesn't grow over it.

Couple of us went inside to see what we could and it looked pretty boring until we saw the stadium. There was hundreds of dead skeletons scattered around the seats. They wasn't freshly dead or nothing, old bones and old clothes.
One skeleton was inside the sandy pit and he had him a golden sword.
The guy with the ladder said he wanted it and promptly lowered himself in.

That's went the whole world went crazy.

There was this glass ball up high that started sparking with lightning. Before we know anything all the doors and exits was closed with a lightning wall.
We heard some cheering screams start coming closer.
My heart nearly burst from my chest. I was so scared of what's coming I jumped into the pit. Couple of the lads all jumped in too, which for some wasn't too brilliant as they fell and hurt themselves.

What came next only got worse. We was split in two groups, thems up above in the seats stood looking around like they wanted to run only they didn't want to jump in. Couple more come down the ladder.
Us down below didn't know what to do next, until these metal balls started shooting out of the wall at us. That urchin kid took the fall in a bad way and then took a metal ball to the head. Ripped open like a ripe melon.
I looked back up at the seating, wishing I'd never come down into this pit and see the eeriest sights. Some kind of whisps was moving around, I think it was them jeering at us. And that's when the rest of the lot jumped in, almost like they was being pushed.
Stay up, go down, none of us know where to run.
I look about and I see the first guy got his golden sword and now him and a couple are running towards a spiked wall in the middle. They're jumping up and over. But this spike wall is a machine, it keeps jabbing out spears that are as long as my arm. When the dog tried to jump over he took a vicious cut, that's the kind that would kill a man.

If it wasn't bad enough, these balls keep shooting out so more of us run towards the middle. Two more guys get gutted by the spikes.

We got to get out of here.

I don't know where I'm going but I know I can't stay here, so I jump inside the spike wall too. But I don't know if this was a good idea either.
I'm inside and it's smooth as ice and so I'm sliding towards a hole that's covered in lightning wall.
But I don't know that it's any safer outside. I just seen more of those same monsters jump into the pit too. Was six of them but one of them got killed by a ball. Couple of our group stood their ground in front of the monsters.

This is all happening too fast.

I slid off the edge and as I'm falling towards the lightning I see the golden sword slash out and hit the wall, a carving in the wall that looks like a wicked tree. And just then the lightning is gone...

And I fall into the darkness.

Day 1 - Swampy treasures

We got to the swamp.
Bunch of crazy people I'm here with.
I saw a big golden building in the distance but everyone wanted to go a different way.
Look, we came here for riches. We can go towards the palace and probably pick up a chalice off the floor or we can walk into the dank swamp.
But, strength in numbers, so I followed them deeper into the swamp.

We had a battle
We were walking through some tall grass and we got set upon by some strange creatures. They were lying down low and then stood, tall as a man. They were running at us screaming even before I knew they were there.

Guess my crazies aren't so bad.
A couple of them took a single swing at the monsters and killed them with one hit.
I think what disturbs me the most is this dog. I've been petting him and letting him have some scraps. When the monsters attacked us this dog jumps in and rips a bite out of one of 'em. That dog is a killer. I feel safer with my crazies than I do around the dog now. He attacked the monsters before I knew what was happening, maybe he'll just attack me when I'm at meal.

It was a close one though. One of the guys got his head bashed in. We took his stuff and parceled it out.

We found the monsters camp just a short way from the battle. They were cooking dinner when we stumbled upon them. I dunno what they was cooking though. The meat was so burned it could have been a man or a monster.
A couple of my crazies helped themselves to the roast. Ain't nobody got sick from it. Guess it was alright. But I couldn't stomach it.

We looked around their camp and found some drinks, 2-copper droppers someone called it. They said it wasn't ale, called it wine. They handed out the bottles but I didn't get one, so no idea what it tastes like.
Right next to the camp we found a lake and a raft.
Two of the guys poled the raft out into the fog. They went pretty far but then came back cause they couldn't see nothing.

Day 1 - The Wise Witch and the Stone

We've started.

The people in town told us how to get into the Sunken City but it doesn't make any sense to me.
Said to touch a stone down at the end of this path.
We were walking down the path and we saw an old crone's house so we stopped for moment to ask if we were headed the right way.
Couple of the guys talked to her and she smeared some ash on them. Dunno what that's about. Maybe them's want to get dirty before going into the swamp just to run back early and act like they slogged through some tough stuff.
Touching that stone was weird, kinda a warm tingly feeling. When I seen a couple in the group touch the stone and disappear I near wet myself. But, everyone in town said this was how you get to the Sunken City.

Day 1 - The Get'n Ready

It seems I'm not the only one who wants to get rich at the Sunken City.

I've grouped with some adventurers to go inside. Strength in numbers right?
We're about twenty-four of us.

I don't know what some of these people are thinking, there are children in the group. They should get back to their mommies.
One guy thought he was ready, but all he has is a ten foot pole. That things twice as tall as a man and he wants to walk through a swamp with it?
If he hits me with that thing I'm gonna snap that twig in two.

We spent a while buying supplies before we embark.

Day 1, The Beginnings

I'm ready to be rich!

I've gone to the Sunken City to find an expedition into it's hidden depths.

Why the Sunken City? All of the Elders in the village talk all day and gab all night about how when they were young they knew someone from the neighboring village who had come back with enough riches to setup an inn or buy a mill. They told me the city was over grown with the swamp that many buildings were lost, hiding, waiting for someone with a pair of strong legs and a sturdy back to go in and fetch the riches.

I don't know. Everyone who goes to the city always gets fabulously rich, I guess an old sunken city probably has stuff just lying around. A discarded trinket from a rich merchants daughter.

Well, either way, I'm going to bring my axe with me. You never know what you'll run into in a swamp.
